Paul Sepuya

Paul Sepuya I live and work in Brooklyn, originally from San Bernardino, CA and studied at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. My work takes a critical look at the act of portrait-making and the construction / representation of relationships, “truth”, and the erotics of the subject-object dynamic. I work in photography, print zines, video, and installation and the subjects are those people I am close too, who connect to a line of shared platonic and romantic attraction, intimacy and intellectual curiosity. Cyclical revision and editing of fragments are central to my work, whereby each piece is completed by its slight or sudden shift with each revisiting of the story; sentences in my narrative constructed to explain longing, memory and resolution. I have shown at envoy, Daniel Reich, Artists Space, White Columns, Printed Matter, LACE, LACMA, and in Paris, Basel, Berlin, Toronto, and Sydney. I have lectured at ICP and SVA and NYU. I published the zine SHOOT from 2005 - 2008 and a monograph of portraits was published in 2005.
